Description & Condition

The music manuscript with printed staffs is in a limp paper binding. The tanned color paper covers were held together by a brown cloth tape on the outside of the spine area, and were connected to the textblock by a clear pressure-sensitive tape at the inner hinges. The front cover has a paper label attached at the center. The textblock is sewn all-along and unsupported.

The binding is in poor condition. The cloth tape that used to hold the covers together is fully detached now. The sewing is loose due to tears on the folds of the textblock. All paper leaves (both covers and textblock) have many tears, abrasions, and discoloration. The covers, the first and last pages, and pages 51 and 64 have pressure-sensitive tape residue with staining near the spine. Some media on the first several leaves are haloing and having strike-through.

Treatment Note

The treatment involved disbinding the book and surface-cleaning each page. Tape adhesive residues were removed using solvents, and small tears and losses on the folios were mended with toned tissues and wheat starch paste. The covers were repaired with layered paper, and the front and back covers were hinged to the first and last gatherings. The textblock was resewn in a long-stitch structure, and new cover boards were attached. The book was covered in bookcloth and handmade paper, and the interior of the boards was lined with the same paper. Finally, the book was dried under weights to complete the treatment.

This treatment was carried out in consultation with Frank Trujillo and Reba Snyder.
