Description & Condition

The letter is typewritten in black ink on machine-made laid paper. It includes a printed letterhead with Albert Einstein’s name and address in black printing ink and is signed “A. Einstein” in black ink at the end. The media is present only on the recto. The typed letters have deep impressions that are visible on the verso under raking light. The bottom edge is uneven, suggesting it was trimmed by hand.

The primary condition issue is the presence of pressure-sensitive tape applied along the folds. Nine pieces of tape are placed vertically and horizontally on the verso along the folds near the edges and on the lower half of the vertical fold. Some pieces overlap the typewritten areas. The taped areas have yellowed and turned translucent, making the letters visible from the verso. Under UV light, and based on adhesive brittleness and yellowing, the tapes appear to be rubber-based rather than synthetic. The paper remains stable and generally planar, except for three horizontal and one vertical crease, which are visibly worn, with minor tears and small losses along the folds.

Treatment Note

The goal of this treatment was to remove the tape carriers and reduce the adhesive, as their continued deterioration posed a risk to the paper. However, the creases were preserved at the owner’s request, as they reflect the letter’s history and storage.

The tape carriers were carefully removed using a heated spatula. Following solubility tests on the adhesive and the typewriter ink, the tape adhesive was reduced using acetone and ethanol applied on a suction disc. Brittle adhesive areas were successfully removed, while sticky areas could not be fully reduced. For these areas, pre-coated tissues with paste and methylcellulose were applied as a protective layer.

This treatment was carried out in consultation with Joan Irving, Melissa Tedone, Mina Porell, and William Donnelly.
