Description & Condition

A discarded sheet of handmade laid paper, written in iron gall ink, was used to practice phytate treatment. Testing with Bathophenanthroline indicator paper yielded a positive (pink) result, confirming the presence of iron (II) ions in the ink. The ink showed minimal deterioration at the time of treatment, with little haloing or breakage observed around the writing.

Treatment Note

The treatment process included the following steps:

  1. Rinsing the sheet in deionized (DI) water.
  2. Immersion in calcium phytate solution three times for ten minutes each, with testing using Bathophenanthroline indicator paper after each immersion.
  3. Rinsing again in DI water.
  4. Immersion in a calcium bicarbonate solution.
  5. Coating the sheet with gelatin.
  6. Drying the sheet.
