Description & Condition

This photo album is a full leather binding with an oval micromosaic inset on the front cover. It is a hollow-back case binding with four false raised bands and tight joints. The book is adorned with gilt brass floral decorations on the front cover, bosses on the back cover, and a clasp with its catch plate. The covers are constructed of thick laminar boards with beveled edges on the outer face. The textblock consists of twenty-four leaves of matte boards, each holding one albumen carte-de-visites per side, connected by v-hinges made of red textile. The leaves are adhesive-bound. The endpapers are white moiré ribbed embossed papers lined with plain paper.

The primary condition issues include the detached front board and failing textile hinges, likely caused by a combination of the album’s heavy construction materials, its relatively weak book structure, and the brittle nature of its materials. The spine lining and endbands are detached from the spine, and the front endpapers and the first few leaves are fully detached, with the textile hinges torn or delaminated along the stub.

Treatment Note

The photo album was analytically examined by Victoria Wong (WUDPAC 2019) in spring 2018, and its damaged micromosaic was treated by Natalya Swanson (WUDPAC 2020) in spring 2019. I was responsible for the treatment of the binding.

The textile v-hinges were reattached and reinforced using wheat starch paste and toned Japanese paper. The spine was consolidated with wheat starch paste and lined with Japanese paper and airplane linen. The detached front cover was reattached using toned Japanese paper laminated with airplane linen for added strength. Nitrile gloves were worn when handling the moiré endpapers, as Victoria’s examination confirmed they contain lead.

This treatment was carried out in consultation with Melissa Tedone and Natalya Swanson.
