Description & Condition

The six volumes form a complete set of full leather bindings with sprinkled decoration on both the leather and the textblock edges. The original bindings were constructed with a tight back and tight joints. The textblocks were sewn on five recessed cord supports with two kettle stations, and each section consisted of six folios. Single-sided plates were tipped in, while foldouts were attached with stubs wrapped around the sections.

The main issue across the volumes is the black bookcloth tape used to reback and reattach the boards. This tape covers the entire leather spine and a third of each board, obscuring the original structure. Additionally, the tape on the inner hinges has caused tears along the flyleaf edges. The leather covers show red rot, heavy abrasion, and exposed boards along the edges and corners. Many endbands are missing or broken, and the sewing is in varying condition.

Treatment Note

The set was brought to the lab for rebinding to match. The tape, though not structurally damaging, obscured the original binding and damaged the flyleaves. Ann and I decided to remove the tape, detach the boards, and rebind with new leather and boards. During disbinding, some volumes showed splits; Volume 2 required full disbinding, guarding, and resewing, while others were spot-sewn with linen. Originally, I planned for full leather rebinding but opted for half-binding due to time constraints. The new sides were covered with period-appropriate 18th-century French style marbled paper.

This treatment was carried out in consultation with Ann Lindsey.
