This book is a cloth-covered case binding with embossed decorations on the covers. The back board is completely detached from the textblock at the inner hinge. The spine covering is partially detached along the outer joints, with missing endcaps.
Ann and I decided to use Todd Pattison’s paper reback technique on several cloth case bindings. This method is particularly effective for cloth case bindings with at least one detached board and embossed cover decorations. The key distinction of this technique is that the spine lining extends onto the boards, creating a sturdy and efficient repair. It also retains the majority of the original materials, making it a sympathetic treatment suitable for both general and special collections. This treatment was performed in consultation with Ann Lindsey.
Before beginning the treatment, I crafted a lifting knife from a microspatula. This small, thin, but sharp tool is ideal for lifting delicate materials like cloth.
