This limp brown leather Bible has five false, mildly raised bands on the spine. The textblock edges are trimmed and gilded, and the spine is lined with woven textile and black paper, including rolled textile stuck-on endbands. The pastedowns are dark brown bonded leather with a gilt line along the outer edges, each extending about half an inch onto the flyleaves between two fly endleaves.
The back inner hinge was completely split, leaving the textblock detached from the case at the back, and the front pastedown was lifting with a large tear and partial splitting near the head and tail. The leather cover showed abrasions, tears, and small losses along the edges, particularly around the endcaps.
The interior of the leather spine and the textblock spine were cleaned with a 4% methylcellulose poultice, removing the thick adhesive and black paper layer in the process. A reversibility layer of Uso Mino was attached to the textblock spine with wheat starch paste (WSP). Airplane linen was lined with Tengujo using WSP and trimmed to the textblock height, leaving flanges widthwise. Two small pieces of acrylic-toned Okawara were attached to the head and tail inside the leather spine with WSP, and a spine lining of Griffen Mill paper was added to the interior of the leather spine, with the Okawara turned in under the pastedowns.
The front pastedown along with the front linen flange was reattached to the leather cover using a mix of WSP and Lascaux 498HV (“the Mix”), and dried under weights. The linen was adhered to the textblock spine with WSP, and the back flange was inserted under the back pastedown, which was then reattached with the Mix and dried under weights. The inner hinges were reinforced with toned Uso Mino and WSP, and lifting leather edges and turn-ins were consolidated with the Mix.
