Housing for Korean Scrolls

Object: Two Korean Scrolls

Author: [Go Eun]

Owning Library: East Asian Collection, University of Chicago Library

Treatment Date: March 2021

About the object & housing: A set of two modern scrolls contains calligraphies in Chinese characters. They are written as 東西相應 (Dong Seo Sang Eung; East and west correspond), 東方無窮 (Dong Bang Moo Goong; East is infinite), 高銀 (Go Eun; calligrapher’s name). The scroll written Dong Seo Sang Eung, or scroll I, has one of the roller knobs missing, whereas the scroll written Dong Bang Moo Goong, or scroll II, has both roller knobs present. Two clamshell boxes were made with blue corrugated boards to store the scrolls safely. In the boxes, curved supports were made with 20pt. cardstock to accommodate the rolled structure.

Drop-Spine Box for Limp Parchment Binding

Object: Limp parchment binding

Owning Library: Law Library, University of Chicago Library

Housing Date: July 2021

About the Object & Housing: This limp parchment binding was in a vulnerable state, as the textblock is not protected by its covers and the parchment case is sensitive to the surrounding environment. The binding will be protected greatly by storing it in a custom-made enclosure. Ann and I decided to make a cloth-covered, double-wall drop spine box together so that we can share tips and tricks of making a drop spine box. I also created an instruction with diagrams, based on Ann’s notes.
